Test preparation strategy:

Now that you know the syllabus, pattern and other required details, let us look at how to prepare for this test.  As this is an online test, you need to adopt a slightly different strategy than how you would prepare for a written test. The strategy you adopt and your hard work would determine your success.

Follow the below steps to prepare:

  1. Print the syllabus and go through the topics and previous year questions and mark the topics you could prepare yourself and topics that require some help from experts.
  2. Go through the previous year papers and analyse the type and complexity of questions from each topic and decide on topics which require detailed revision or preparation versus topics you could answer without any preparation. This would help you invest your time appropriately.
  3. Come up with a study plan. I would recommend a T-Minus plan (reverse plan from the target date – exam date) with sufficient buffer days to accommodate for any unexpected days that might be lost due to any unpredictable reasons. This plan should include time for practice tests topic wise and full mock tests towards the end of your preparation.
  4. See to it that you prepare for almost all topics and avoid leaving any topics as this test is a test of your knowledge across topics and who knows?, the topic you consider tough might be the easiest from the perspective of this test. Therefore, do not skip any topics. If you are not familiar with topic, don’t hesitate to take help from experts if you have access to them.
  5. Forming a study group of students preparing for this test would be good idea, so that you could help each other out.
  6. Take periodic topic wise tests as you complete studying each topic. Take full mock test once preparation is over.
  7. If you are not self-motivated and well organized, consider joining a coaching class if you have access to any good centres. See to it that you choose the one with knowledgeable and passionate teachers.

Test Strategy:

Follow the below winning strategies.

Tip 1: Attempt all questions. There are no negative marks. Therefore, learn to eliminate wrong answers even if you do not know the exact answers.

Tip 2: Use approximation technique, rather than spending time to calculate all mathematical questions to save time. Please remember, you need to answer 50 question in 60 minutes for Paper I test and 100 questions in 120 minutes for Paper II Test. This leaves you with approximately little over 1 minute per question.

Tip 3: Answer questions in multiple rounds. Try and go through questions quickly and answer all the easy questions first, skipping difficult ones. You need to decide to skip or answer in the first 15-20 seconds. If you don’t follow this you might miss out answering easy questions that are at the end as you might run out of time. Therefore, complete one round to answer easy ones and come back and spend time for the difficult ones.

Tip 4: If you run into any question that you do not have any idea at all, guess and answer anyway immediately in the first attempt itself, so that you will not waste time again in the next scan.

Tip 5: Stay cool. A relaxed mind will work better than a stressed one.

Good luck with your preparation and the test.
